Principles of Design

Once again, this assignment will remind you of what you learned about the "Principles of Design."    Below is your review.  They are:

Pattern and Repetition:  An element repeats itself over and over in the composition.  It can be repeated in a consistent pattern and/or in a variation of the pattern.

Graphic Design

Emphasis in a composition refers to developing points of interest to pull the viewer's eye to important parts of the body of the work.

Balance is a sense of stability in the body of work. Balance can be created by repeating same shapes and by creating a feeling of equal weight.

Graphic Design

Unity is seen in art when all the parts equal a whole.

Movement  adds excitement to your work by showing action and directing the viewers eye throughout the picture plane. Rhythm is a type of movement in art.   It is seen in repeating of shapes  and colors. Alternating lights and darks also give a sense of rhythm. Don't be afraid to experiment with your shutter speed.  If there is something that is new to you, you have the world at your fingertips  on how to learn to do it!

Photography

Generally, in photography, you will often use shutter speed to affect movement and rhythm.

Contrast: The definition refers to the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama.

Photography Assignment

Using the same format as the last assignment (please refer to Design Elements), please provide 2 photos of each principle.  Each photo should have the F Stop, White Balance, and Shutter speed next to it.  Again, write one paragraph for each Design Principle.  This will be due on Thursday, September  28 at the end of class.
One thing you will need to do is do some research.  I expect extremely aesthetic photos.

Graphic Design Assignment

Pattern/Repetition: On this assignment, create a logo for a company called ChildsPlay. This company is nationwide after school care facility that takes in children from kindergarten to 8th grade.  Start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the logo.  You should complete it in color and gray scale. It should look good in both full color and/or black and white (gray scale). This must be created in ILLUSTRATOR. 8.5x11 inches, 300 ppi. Remember, Pattern and Repetition should be the main design principle that is seen in this logo. Write a paragraph describing your process.

Emphasis: On this assignment, you will concentrate on typography.  You will want to figure out a way to create EMPHASIS through typography.  You can do that through several different elements like color, shape/form, etc.,... Again, start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the typography. Remember, your goal is creating a strong EMPHASIS in your piece.
Use Illustrator for this. 8.5x11, 300 ppi.

Balance: For this assignment, you will create a Cause Poster. You will use ASYMMETRICAL Balance for your poster. Again, start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the cause poster. Create this in Photoshop... 8.5x11 inches, 300 ppi.  Make sure you use guides to keep your type from falling off the page (unless it's designed to do so).

Unity: For this piece, you may create a poster or design that uses ONE art element that holds the unity together. Again, start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the piece. Create this in black and white/gray scale.  Create this in ILLUSTRATOR. 8.5x11 inches, 300 ppi.

Rhythm and Movement: Your goal for this design principle is to create a feeling of movement and rhythm. This is an open assignment, meaning you may use Illustrator or Photoshop. It can be a design, a poster, typography, ... but commit to something. Again, start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the piece. 8.5x11 inches, 300 ppi.

Contrast:  This assignment will be an Illustration that goes along with an article called Metamorphosis.  The article is about small children and the changes they go through in becoming adolescents (stage before adulthood). Remember contrast can be achieved with shape/form, color (complimentary colors), ... look at your elements and decide which one will create the contrast. This can be done either in Photoshop or Illustrator. Again, start off sketching ideas.  You will need to provide at least 3 sketches. Then choose one of your sketches to work from and complete the piece 8.5 x11 inches, 300 ppi (portrait only).

There will be some class time in which I will show you how I want this put together.  Download the template below, but do not start putting it together until I have gone over it with you.

I will show you to use InDesign Properly between the roll-out date  and due date.
