Expressive Thinking > Photography

Start Date: October 01, 2019
Due Date: October 21, 2019

This assignment is going to take research, lots of thinking and creating some studies along the way.  In the end, you will have 6 complete prints (you will do a lot more) that will become what we know as a series.  This will also prepare you for your CourseWork.

Step 1:  Choose one of the words below.  Once you choose that word you will do some research on that word.  Once you choose that word, you will need to let me know what word you will be working with.  You MAY NOT change your mind once you choose your word.  This must be done by the end of class on October 11.  All students must choose different words.  You must choose from the list below.  Email your choice of word to me @ stephanie.stark@stlucieschools.org.
Step 2:  Research the word.  Write all the definitions you can find - verbs, nouns, adverbs... however many you can find.  How is it most often used?  List as many ways visually that you can think of... and then make a list of abstract ways you could visually see the word used.  See the samples below.
Step 3:  Once you have done a lot of research... then begin your process with writing an essay of your thoughts...  or even a poem.   Search for the deepest possible meaning of the word and put it on paper.  Yes, this will need to be turned in, as well.  I would even like to see how you went about your research.  Keep all of your research, as you will need to compile it into your final document.
Step 4:  Your personal interpretation is very important... this is going to require you to dig deep.  Now you have to visualize what you have researched and written.  Begin taking photos... try SEVERAL ideas.  Do studies... and always remember the Design Elements and Principles that you have learned.
Step 5:  After you have tried several ideas (probably a minimum of 5), settle on one... and perfect it.  In the end, you will need 6 photographs for your series.

ON THE LAST DAY OF EACH WEEK, YOU ARE TO EMAIL ME A CONTACT SHEET OF THE WORK YOU HAVE DONE THAT WEEK.

Below, you will see some ideas that came through with the word "Barriers."  To see each photo larger, click on the first one and then you can scroll through them.
Personally, I think you can do a much better job than these students...  If you decide to work in black and white, keep it all in black and white.  Be consistent.

Think out of the box!  For instance, if you choose Freedom, don't use the American Flag...  think deeply.
